Criteria for Entry to Year 3 (7+)

The Entrance procedure for children entering at 7+ consists of a group interview and an informal test comprising of Maths and English.

Personal and Social Skills

We are looking for enthusiastic, well-motivated children who are keen to learn from the rich academic and non-academic curriculum that we offer at Belmont. At the 7+ point of entry, we expect pupils to be working towards level 3 at Key Stage 1. Children are expected to take an interest in the range of opportunities they are given and to integrate well into our diverse community. We have high standards of politeness and manners and children are expected to show consideration towards others.

To achieve their full potential, we expect children to be able to work on tasks set within class and for prep in a positive frame of mind and to work independently when required to do so.

We require a supporting reference from the candidate's current school.

Literacy

Children are expected to:

  • Express themselves orally using a varied vocabulary.
  • Relate events that have happened to themselves and others in an expressive way which engages the listener.
  • Read on sight, the high frequency words covered in List 1 of the National Literacy Strategy.
  • Read aloud with intonation and expression, taking account of punctuation e.g. speech marks and exclamation marks.
  • Make predictions about stories and non-fiction accounts.
  • Be able to compare books, noting similarities and differences e.g. in layout and theme.
  • Be able to make simple inferences about thoughts and feelings of characters.
  • Spell the majority of high frequency words in List 1 of the National Literacy Strategy.
  • Use the four basic handwriting joins.
  • Write a story using appropriate story language e.g. information about the setting and character and to include dialogue.
  • Write stories in which all the events happen in the past.
  • Make their writing interesting by using a varied vocabulary and adding extra information.
  • Be able to write in an appropriate non-fiction style e.g. simple reports.
  • Use conjunctions such as 'and', 'so', 'next' and 'finally' in their writing.

Numeracy

Children are expected to:

  • Count, read, write and order whole numbers to at least 100 and to know what each digit represents.
  • Be able to describe and extend simple number sequences.
  • Know by heart facts for the 2 and 10 multiplication tables.
  • Understand the concept that subtraction is the inverse of addition.
  • Understand the operation of multiplication as repeated addition.
  • Know and use halving as the inverse of doubling.
  • Use the mathematical names for common 2-D and 3-D shapes.
  • Be able to sort shapes and describe some of their features.
  • Be ale to use mathematical vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement.
  • Estimate, measure and compare lengths, masses and capacities using standard units.
  • Read a simple scale to the nearest labelled division.
  • Choose and use appropriate operations and strategies to solve problems, and be able to explain how the problem was solved.

All children are expected to meet our academic, personal and social criteria. However, priority will be given to children with strong links to the Mill Hill Foundation.

Admissions Process for Belmont

It is the Foundation's aim to offer continuous education for pupils from the age of 3 to 18. Transfer from Grimsdell (hyperlink) to Belmont and from Belmont to Mill Hill (hyperlink) will be automatic, subject to certain conditions.

Children who entered Grimsdell at age 3

Prior to entering Grimsdell children will undergo an interview and assessment. During their time at the Pre-Prep they will be regularly monitored and assessed for entry to Belmont into Year 3.

Children entering Belmont at age 7

All external candidates are interviewed and assessed in small groups of 10. Results are posted out in mid December.

Children entering Belmont at age 11

External applications are accepted up to mid January of the year when your child is in Year 6. All children are interviewed in the Autumn Term prior to the 11+ test which takes place mid January. Results are sent out mid February.
