Charities
Belmont pupils are encouraged not only to donate money to a host of different charitable causes, but also to give their time and effort to help others.
We ensure that all pupils are aware of various schemes both in the local community and the wider world. Children are allowed to decide what they will support, how they will raise money, and they are often involved in the planning of manifold school events which are based on charitable causes.
Our pupils and parents have been wonderfully successful in raising substantial amounts for various good causes. Oti Day is an important date in our calendar and is held in memory of a former pupil, Sylvester Oti. Children wear mufti and the proceeds go to the Sickle Cell Fund. Year 8, as part of their PSHE and Citizenship programme, take charge of the day and usually manage to raise over £2,000 from various activities. Donations also go towards their selected class charities.
As a reflection of our concern for charities abroad, we collected toys and clothes for a school and an orphanage in Kabul, Afghanistan. At Harvest we supported the Upper Room charity, represented by Bruce Marquart. This charity runs a children's project and breakfast club in Central London. At Christmas our Carol Service raised money for Crisis. A Practiceathon was undertaken for Clic, a charity for children's cancer; Sense, the charity for deaf/blind people was also supported. Comic Relief Day and Jeans for Genes Day were also remarkable events.
It is not unusual for us to make donations in excess of £10,000 in an academic year. So much goodwill effort and time reflect the care and concern Belmont pupils have for those who are less fortunate and whose lives are affected by disaster, sickness, disability and poverty.
