Academic Environment
Pupils receive a broad curriculum that is rich and balanced for both boys and girls. In addition to learning all the National Curriculum subjects, pupils start French in Year 3 and Latin is introduced in Year 6.
Most children enter Belmont at the age of seven and join the Lower School. Class sizes are small and children have a great deal of individual attention to help them settle in and to assess their abilities. The form teacher teachesmost lessons, but specialists provide teaching for French, PE, games, swimming, music and ICT. Children are divided into ability sets for maths and English and the most able are placed in a streamed group to provide additional extension work.
When pupils enter the Upper School in Year 6, specialists teach them all their subjects in dedicated subject rooms. Potential scholarship candidates are identified and setting atrangements are extended to include French and Latin. Belmont pupils at age 11 gain SAT results that are significantly above the national average, with more than 60% gaining levels expected of 12-13 year olds.
Most Belmont pupils move on to our senior school at Mill Hill; those moving to other schools gain places at a wide range of academic day and boarding schools in and around London.
