Friends of BelmontFriends of Belmont known as ‘the FOB’, is the school’s parents’ association and all parents with children at the school are automatically members. The FOB plans various social and fund raising events throughout the school year, providing opportunities for parents, children and staff to meet informally. Our two biggest fundraising events each year are the magical Winter Wonderland and the Summer Fun Day. Funds raised by the FOB are used to provide extra facilities for the children at the school and also to support various local charities. Over the past few years FOB donations to the school have funded, or assisted with the funding of, the adventure playground and the play area near the Jubilee Building, a movable stage for use by the children and tiered seating in the Jubilee Hall for concerts and theatrical events, stage lighting and a stained glass window in the chapel to celebrate its 75th anniversary. Amongst the charities that have benefitted from the FOB’s donations are: the children’s ward and the special care baby unit at Barnet General Hospital, Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice, the North London Hospice, Oakleigh School and Oak Lodge School for children with learning disabilities. Our current charity is the The Bobath Centre for Children with Cerebral Palsy based in East Finchley. Summer Fun Day Report25th June 2011 Despite a damp and overcast start Belmont’s Summer Fun Day opened on the Master’s Lawn to the sound of the Mill Hill Combined Cadet Force Corps of Drums. There were activities for the children such as the Beat the Goalie, The Wet Sponge Throwing competition – with many thanks going to the gap year students and Mr Ince who allowed themselves to be drenched several times over. There was the Shoot the Hoop and the Coconut Shy stall plus the golf putting game and Disco dancing competitions. As for the main attraction this year – Body Zorbing. The children wriggled into large plastic balls and then launched themselves at each other, some of them spending more of their allotted time upside down than on their feet, but all of them coming out wanting another go. Some of the parents were angling for a session too! We were thrilled that the Mill Hill Fire Station White Watch could come along and be a part of our celebrations and they very kindly allowed the children to sit in the driving seat of their engine and have a go with their rather powerful hose. To wrap up the day’s events there was the raffle drawn by Mrs Duncan and the launch of the Great Balloon Race to see whose balloon will travel the furthest. Results of this will be announced at the start of next term. With some stalls set up by local companies adding to the fun, the three hours flew past and money was raised, which will go in part to our nominated charity for this year – The Bobath Centre for Children with Cerebral Palsy, who also joined us for the event. A huge thank you to all who helped set up and clear up, to those who ran the stalls during the event and to those who donated items to enable this year’s Summer Fun Day to be such a success.
