An Evening to Celebrate the Work of Michael Morpurgo

On Monday the 20th June, Year 6 pupils at Belmont School presented a wonderful evening of expressive arts to celebrate the work of Michael Morpurgo. This included drama, dance and movement, singing, music and martial arts. There was also a 'movie trailer' which the pupils had acted in and filmed and informative power point presentation, all led by the pupils themselves.

The evening was the culmination of many months of preparation with pupils raising over £5,000 for the Charity Farms for City Children of which Michael Murpurgo is patron. To raise this huge sum the pupils completed a read-a-thon and a sponsored swim. The pupils also entered a number of exciting competions including a photographic competition, a lost chapter competition, a graphic novel competition, an interview and poetry all inspired by the writing of Morpurgo. There were many paintings, clay models and various artisitic interpretations on display, where children had brought his stories to life through their own creative work.

Michael Morpurgo was unable to attend the production, due to prior engagements in New York where 'War Horse' on Broadway had just won a number of Toni awards. However, Michael did find the time to send the pupils of Belmont these words of support and encouragement and thanks. Part of the letter he wrote to the children is that:

'One of the great frustrations in life is that you can't be in two places at once. I am working on a solution to this at the moment and will let you know how I get on!'

The evening was a great success and Year 6 should not only be proud of their wonderful performance and the excellent and diverse array of artistic and English skills on dislay but, most importantly, raising such a substantial amount of money for charity.

Year 6 French Trip

Year 6 at Etaples

Year 6 visited Northern France, staying at a holiday centre near Etaples. It was a very busy three days including a visit to Nausicaa Aquarium, trying sand sailing and meeting French pupils in a school, with whom they had previously corresponded. They were able to use their French skills to buy items in Etaples weekly market and experienced the atmosphere of Etaples Military Cemetery.

Hopefully all of Year 6 not only enjoyed the experience, but gained new social skills in living in a different environment. Their behaviour was exemplary and they were excellent ambassadors for Belmont. Thank you to all the staff who accompanied the trip (some at very late notice).

Corps of Drums

On Wednesday 11th May Mill Hill School CCF had its Annual General Inspection by Lt Col John Powell of the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment. Two Belmontians, Vinay Patel and Cameron Nash, were present in the Corps of Drums. They have worked extremely hard this year attending the practices on a Friday evening at Mill Hill. Both their brothers are also in the Corps of Drums and are carrying on the family connection to what is an area of excellence within the Combined Cadet Force at Mill Hill. Vinay and Cameron both performed to very high standards and have been a great credit to Belmont in the way they have approached the training and the displays this year. I know that both Vinay and Cameron are looking forward to performing at the Belmont summer fair in June.

Year 8’s Ski in Italy

For 33 Year 8 pupils, the first Sunday of the Easter holidays was a very early, albeit very exciting, start as they were meeting at Belmont at 2am to go to Prato Nevoso in Italy for a week’s skiing. Despite the hour, they were buzzing throughout the flight and two coach transfers and so it was a relief to all when, 9 hours after meeting, we finally pulled into our hotel.

With six days of terrific snow and temperatures in the high 20s the week was a roaring success. The diverse après ski kept everyone amused in the evenings. The pupils had the opportunity to participate in a quiz night, bum boarding, a disco, bingo and crepes, and on the last night everyone enjoyed a trip to the cinema.

The hotel was ideally located and allowed everyone to ski in and out of it as soon as they were competent enough to do so. They catered incredibly well for all of our needs and with two main courses at every meal, provided plenty of food with a selection of bread and salads as well.

All in all a successful week was had by all – pupils and staff alike. A big thank you to all the pupils for a wonderful week, and also to Mrs Pym, Mr Hayward and Mr Symes for accompanying the trip and adding to its success.

Her training programme has been of great interest to the many budding athletes at Belmont who have watched her progress with enthusiasm and admiration. Good luck on April 17th Rose!

This week saw the string players at Belmont thrill their audience with their choice of music and expertise. The Main Orchestra began the proceedings with 'Tango in C' and the event's finale was the Chamber Group's performance of Mozart's 'Ave Verum Corpus'. Informal concerts were introduced in order that performers of all levels could have the opportunity to play in front of an audience. Pride and Prejudice

Ambitious? Very! Possible? Of course! Worth the journey? Absolutely! With so many pupils possessing great potential and talent – it was decided that this year the Year 8 play would be a production of Pride and Prejudice which proved to be a total knockout. All cast and crew are to be commended on the excellence of the production. Despite the challenges behind such a production some comments made by the children were ‘Everyone has done a great job, especially Mr Russo’, ‘It has been great to re-enact such a well known novel. It has been an experience that I will never forget’, ‘It’s been a pleasure to work with such talented actors and actresses. I have had the best time!’. By the time the final curtain came down the audience were spellbound and the children had superseded all of the staff/parents’ greatest expectations.

He is the eldest of the boys who have been sponsored through their education by funding from Mill Hill School.

Belmont children were privileged this week when he came over to share some of his knowledge of the ancient Vedic scriptures and also to do a demonstration of chanting.

History and Art come to Life

Children outside the National Gallery

This week Year 3 were metaphorically transported back to Ancient Egypt whilst Year 6 were literally transported to sunny Central London as part of their History and Art education.

Children in Year 3 were captivated by a series of interactive performances which illustrated how long ago the Ancient Egyptians died out, and how important the Nile was to them. During the afternoon they were also familiarised with some Egyptian words and characters!

In the meantime Year 6 children also benefitted from their educational visit to London. Firstly they visited the Museum of London where they studied artefacts from the Roman, Georgian and Victorian eras. The rest of the day was spent in the National Gallery where some of the pupils were lucky enough to meet one of the artists in residence, Ben Johnson, captured the children's imaginations as he talked about his work and explained the inspiration behind some of his pieces of artwork.

Hot Topic

Lindsey Fransmann and Sophie Iliffe Lindsey Fransmann and Sophie Iliffe

Three ex-Belmontians prompted a change in tradition at Mill Hill School this week! L Fransman, I Whitby and S Loizou (Year 9) teamed up with Year 12 and Year 13 pupils to debate the following topic which was proposed by L Fransman 'Whether or not the white poppies, produced by the Peace Pledge Union as a pacifist alternative to the traditional red poppy, should be allowed to be worn at the school on Remembrance Day in November'. In contrast to the red poppy sold by the British Legion, the white poppy raises money for pacifist education projects, aimed at raising awareness of the social values and habits which make violence and war a more likely outcome.

Alex Warna, Isobel Whitby and Sophie Loizou Alex Warna, Isobel Whitby and Sophie Loizou

In favour of the motion the basic argument put forward was that the wearing of the white poppy increased awareness of war and its causes and therefore it could help reduce the likelihood of war occurring in the future. The main argument against the motion was that the white poppy itself was an insult to those who had lost their lives fighting for their country in the past.

The vote came out in favour of the opposition. The topic was ably debated throughout with both teams presenting their arguments lucidly, with cogency and excellent public speaking skills.
